16.09.00 Today Volker was very tough: At 8 o'clock he got himself a permit to hike down the Black Canyon -there is no trail and you have to climb on steep slopes upon loose stones (4 hours). And there he went whereas I myself chose to hike the Oak Flat trail which allowed me to have a good look down into the canyon without too much effort. After lunch we drove the few kilometers to Montrose: our afternoon was filled with laundry and grocery shopping.
16.09.00 Heute war Volker sehr mutig: Er ist den Canyon bis zum Fluss hinunter gewandert. Da ist ja gar kein Weg dorthin, man muss an steilen Hängen über lose Steinen klettern (4 Stunden)! Und während er das gemacht hat, habe ich mir die sehr viel einfachere Wanderung "Oak Flat" ausgesucht, von der aus ich auch fantastische Blicke in den Canyon ohne zuviel Mühe hatte. Nach dem Mittagessen sind wir die paar Kilometer nach Montrose gefahren und haben dort einen Wasch- und Einkaufs-Nachmittag eingelegt.

17.09.00 Drive to Telluride, a very nice (ski resort) town. We took the (free!) gondola up the mountain and down to Mountain Village and enjoyed the beautiful scenery as well as the friendly atmosphere of Telluride. Drive to Ouray where we settled at the Amphitheatre Campground located above town.
17.09.00 Fahrt nach Telluride, ein wirklich hübscher, angenehmer (Wintersport)ort. Wir sind mit der (kostenlosen!) Gondel hoch auf die Berge und dann runter zu Mountain Village gefahren und haben die schöne Umgebung und die freundliche Atmosphäre von Telluride genossen. Fahrt nach Ouray und Übernachtung am Amphitheater-Campingplatz oberhalb der Stadt.

18.09.00 In Ouray visit of the Box Canyon Falls that are indeed spectacular. Drive to Silverton on the famous "Million Dollar Road". Silverton is a very nice old mining town. It is also here where the Durango & Silverton Steam Railroad ends up (we will take it tomorrow out from Durango). We had lunch at a very good Mexican Restaurant "Romero" and -of course after a short nap- we continued our way south to Durango. We went to the movies and saw Space Cowboys with Clint Eastwood as an Astronaut -fortunately a good film after so many bad ones we have seen lately...
18.09.00 In Ouray Besuch der Box Canyon Wasserfällen, die wirklich spektakulär sind. Fahrt nach Silverton auf der "Millionen-Dollar-Straße". Silverton ist eine süße alte Minenstadt. Dort endet auch die Fahrt des Durango & Silverton Dampfzuges (morgen werden wir die Fahrt aus Durango machen). Mittagessen bei einem guten Mexikaner "Romero" und - natürlich nachdem wir eine kleine Siesta gemacht haben - sind wir weiter nach Durango gefahren. Wir sind ins Kino gegangen und haben den Film "Space Cowboys" mit Clint Eastwood als Astronaut gesehen. Gott sei Dank war das ein guter Film, nachdem wir so viele schlechte in letzter Zeit gesehen haben...

19.09.00 Traveling with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango to Silverton was really an experience: breathtaking views at 20 km/h with breathtaking soot during the whole trip... It took 3,5 hours to make the 65 km long trip from Durango to Silverton. The same thing back; so it was 6.20 pm when we were back in Durango. Drive towards Mesa Verde and overnight at the Target Tree Campground.
19.09.00 Die Fahrt mit der Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Schmalspurbahn von Durango nach Silverton war wirklich außergewöhnlich: atemberaubende Ausblicke bei 20 km/h mit atemberaubenden Ruß während der ganzen Fahrt... Der Zug braucht 3,5 Stunden für die Strecke Durango-Silverton. Das gleiche zurück, so dass wir erst um 18.20 Uhr zurück in Durango waren. Trotzdem sind wir weiter in Richtung Mesa Verde gefahren und haben beim Target Tree Campingplatz übernachtet.
Our train, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad driven by a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive, winds through the spectacular canyons of Animas River, Colorado. / Unser Zug, die Durango & Silverton Schmalspurbahn, wird von einer mit Kohle betriebenen Dampflokomotive angetrieben. Die Fahrt durch die Canyons des Animas Flusses ist wirklich spektakulär.
