January 9, 2009: Ourique – Caldas da Rainha – Peniche (very cold, cloudy)
We had one of the coldest nights since we have been in Portugal: 1º C! We first drove to Caldas de Rainha to find a camping site, but there was nothing, just a nice park where we stayed a few minutes before a guardian came by and told us that we could not stay here. So we continued to Peniche and after first driving to Casais de Baleal we found the Municipal Campground we were looking for. We were amazed with the cheap price: we only paid 5,16 euros for a night with electricity! Well, as Volker wasn´t feeling very well, I took my bicycle and drove into Peniche. I came back when it was almost dark (and I have no lights on my bicycle…).
09. 01. 2009: Ourique – Caldas da Rainha – Peniche (sehr kalt, bewölkt)
Es war eine der kältesten Nächte seitdem wir in Portugal sind: 1º C! Wir sind zuerst nach Caldas de Rainha gefahren, um dort einen Campingplatz zu finden, aber wir haben nur einen schönen Park gefunden. Nachdem wir einige Minuten dort standen, ist gleich ein Wächter gekommen und hat ganz lieb uns gesagt, dass wir hier nicht bleiben konnten. Wir sind dann nach Peniche weiter gefahren und haben uns, nachdem wir den städtischen Campingplatz schon in Casais de Baleal gesucht haben, auf den richtigen in Peniche (Parque de Campismo Municipal) installiert. Wir waren ganz erstaunt, wie billig es dort ist: Wir haben für eine Nacht inkl. Strom 6,16 EUR bezahlt. Da Volker sich nicht wohl fühlte, bin ich mit meinem Fahrrad in die Stadt los gefahren und bin erst zurück, als es fast ganz dunkel war, was nicht besonders toll ist, denn ich habe kein Licht an meinem Fahrrad...
January 10, 2009: Peniche (very cold, sunny but windy)
After Julia found a very nice boondocking place with campers exactly in front of the old town, we checked out and drove to that place. It is located exactly opposite of the fire fighters.
11. Januar 1009: Peniche (sehr kalt, sonnig aber windig)
Nachdem ich gestern einen sehr schönen Stellplatz mit Wohnis genau am Eingang der kleinen Stadt entdeckt habe, haben wir ausgecheckt und sind dort hin gefahren. Es liegt genau vor dem Hauptzugang zu der Altstadt und gegenüber der Feuerwehr.

January 11, 2009: Peniche – Óbidos – Nazaré (cold – sunny)
After our extended Sunday breakfast we drove around the peninsula of Peniche. We made a stop at Cabo Carvoeiro and other interesting places. Next time we decided that we want to do it by bicycle. After this little tour (8 km) we stopped at the fortress of Peniche and visited the Museum. During the Salazar time political prisoners were jailed here. At noon we drove to Óbidos, a nice walled town that looks unchanged for 500 years. We found that there is an official private Camper overnight place along the aqueduct: parking during day time until 17:00 is free of charge. Overnight stay 6 €, gray/black water disposal, fresh water 2 €. We visited the charming town and then left at 16:30 towards Nazaré, a very famous seaside resort along the Portuguese Atlantic coast. We were so surprised to find this place crowded, much more than any place on the Algarve at this time of the year! Maybe it comes from the fact that today is Sunday. We parked somewhere in town, and after having a coffee along the promenade we drove up to Sítio and towards “Farol de Nazaré” (lighthouse) where we decided to stay for overnight on a parking with a gorgeous view upon the Nazaré Bay. We are very close to the upper station of the “elevator” that goes down the cliff wall to Nazaré.
11. Januar 2009: Peniche – Óbidos – Nazaré
(kalt – sonnig)
Nach unserem Sonntagsfrühstück sind wir einmal um die
Halbinsel rumgefahren. Stopp am Cabo Carvoeiro und andere interessante Plätze.
Das nächste Mal wollen wir die Halbinsel mit dem Fahrrad fahren. Am Ende unserer
kleinen Tour (8 km) sind wir in die Festung von Peniche gegangen und haben das
Museum besichtigt. Dort wurden während der Salazar-Zeit politische Gefangene
gehalten. Gegen 12 Uhr sind wir nach Óbidos gefahren, eine 500 Jahre alte
befestigte Stadt mit voll erhaltenen Stadtmauern. Wir haben bei dem Aquaedukt
geparkt, wo es ein richtiger Stellplatz für Wohnis gibt: bis 17 Uhr kann man
dort kostenlos parken. Übernachtung kostet 6 €, nur Ver-/Entsorgung 2 €. Um
16:30 Uhr sind wir weiter nach Nazaré gefahren, wo wir ganz überrascht waren,
dass dort so viel los war! Vielleicht weil es heute Sonntag ist, aber die
Promenade war voll und die Autos suchten nach Parkplätzen. Wir haben erst
irgendwo in der Stadt geparkt – in der Nähe der Bibliothek – aber nachdem wir
einen Kaffee getrunken haben, sind wir hoch nach Sítio und Richtung Farol de
Nazaré (Leuchtturm) gefahren und haben uns auf einem Parkplatz für die Nacht
installiert, von dem man einen fantastischen Blick auf die Bucht von Nazaré
hat. Wir sind ganz nahe der Bergstation von des „Fahrstuhls“, der nach unten
nach Nazaré der Felsenwand entlang fährt.

January 12, 2009: Nazaré – Alcobaça – Batalha – Luso/Buçaco (cold – sunny)
First thing we did was to take the elevator (0,90 €/pax one way) down to Nazaré. We then drove to Alcobaça where we visited the monastery which was founded in the 12th century. In the church are the tombs of Dom Pedro and Dona Inês (a dramatic love story). After that we had to warm us up with a good coffee and special backery from the Café Alcoa across the monastery entrance. Drive to Batalha where the special feature for me of the monastery we visited there was the roofless unfinished chapels with its staggering ornamentations. Later we drove to Luso (thermal spa) and the Buçaco Forest and went to Cruz Alta and Arco Sula. There is a little bit snow everywhere. Overnight stay at Arco Sula with splendid views on the Serra da Estrela.
12. 01. 2009: Nazaré – Alcobaça –
Batalha – Luso/Buçaco (kalt – sonnig)
Als Erstes sind wir heute mit dem “Fahrstuhl” nach
unten, also Nazaré, gefahren. Danach sind wir nach Alcobaça gefahren, um dort
den Kloster, der im 12. Jh. Gegründet wurde, zu besichtigen. In der Kirche sind
die Gräber von Dom Pedro und Dona Inês (furchtbar dramatische
Liebesgeschichte). Danach mussten wir uns erst mal mit einem guten Kaffee in der
Konditorei gegenüber des Klosters stärken (Café Alcoa). Fahrt nach Batalha, wo
das Besondere an dem riesigen Kloster die unvollendeten, unbedeckten Kapellen
mit ihren erstaunlichen Verzierungen sind. Danach sind wir nach Luso (ein
Kurort) und zum Buçaco-Wald gefahren, auf zur Cruz Alta und zum Sula Tor. Es
liegt noch Schnee hier und da! Übernachtung vor dem Sula Tor, einem sehr schön
gelegener Parkplatz mit tollem Blick u.a. auf die Serra da Estrela.

January 13, 2009: Buçaco/Luso – Porto
(first cold/rainy then cold/pretty sunny)
After a very rainy night, we drove to the very special Bucasso Palace Hotel
within the park and walked around for about an hour. Then we headed to Porto
and tried to go to the Municipal Campground “Prelada” but it doesn’t exist
anymore! So we decided to drive to Vila Nova de Gaia and settle on the same
parking place where we had been 4 years ago, about 1 km from the market place
in Vila Nova de Gaia. We walked up to the market place, took a taxi to the
tourist information on the Praça dos Aliados. Walk through the old town and
afternoon tea with scones etc at the Majestic Café (10 €), dinner at Abadia.
Taxi back (6 €) to our parking lot on the other side of the River Douro between
Vila Nova de Gaia and Afurada, where we stay for overnight (GPS: N 41.14088º W 8-62289º)
13. 01. 2009: Buçaco/Luso – Porto (zuerst
kalt/Regen, dann kalt/ziemlich sonnig)
Nach einer regenreichen Nacht sind wir zum
ausgefallenen Hotel Bucasso Palace gefahren und von dort aus durch den Park
spazieren gegangen. Dann sind wir weiter nach Porto gefahren und haben
versucht, auf den städtischen Campingplatz „Prelada“ zu gehen, aber der
existiert nicht mehr! So sind wir dann – wie vor 4 Jahren – auf dem großen,
kostenlosen Parkplatz gegenüber von Porto, am Fluss entlang und etwa 1 km von Vila
Nova de Gaia entfernt, gefahren und haben dort geparkt. Zu Fuß bis zum Mercado
von Gaia und von dort aus ein Taxi bis zur Praça dos Aliados, wo sich die
Tourist Information befindet, genommen (7 €).. Spaziergang durch die Altstadt,
5 o´clock tea mit scones (10 €) beim Majestic Café eingenommen und Abendessen
im Abadia (30 €). Zurück mit Taxi bis zum Wohni (6 €). Übernachtung auf dem
Parkplatz zwischen Vila Nova de Gaia und Afurada (GPS: N 41.14088º W 8-62289º)

January 14, 2009: Porto – Aveiro
(cold – sunny)
Drive to Aveiro where we parked at the big parking lot on the A25 side of the
Canal de São Roque (GPS N 40.64437 W 8.65663). Sightseeing and lunch at the
Pastelaria “Magestik” with its cheap and good lunch meal for 4,50 €. We also
tried the typical “ovo mole” which is a white pastry filled with a yummy thick
custard. We drove to the seaside town Barra and settled in the Praia de Barra
campground. A stroll through the town of Barra and along the promenade and the
entrance to the harbour was our last outdoor activity for today.
14. 01. 2009: Porto – Aveiro (kalt –
sonnig)
Fahrt nach Aveiro, wo wir am großen Parkplatz am Canal
de São Roque (GPS N 40.64437 W 8.65663) auf der A25-Seite
geparkt haben. Besichtigung der Stadt, leckerer Mittagstisch bei der Pastelaria
„Magestik“ und natürlich haben wir die typischen „ovos moles“ probiert: es
handelt sich um ein Gebäck, das aus einer Eier-Vanille-Creme besteht, die in
einer oblaten-ähnlichen Hüllung gefüllt ist – sehr lecker! Danach sind wir zum
Küste gefahren und haben uns auf dem Campingplatz „Praia de Barra“ am
gleichnamigen Ort installiert. Ein kleiner Spaziergang durch die Stadt und
entlang der Promenade und der Einfahrt zum Hafen rundeten den Tag ab.

January 15, 2009: Barra –
Montemor-o-Velho (cold and very much rain)
It rained a lot today, so we had to change our programme (we wanted to do a
bicycle tour) and took off at about 10 am. We drove South to Costa Nova and –
as it stopped raining for a while – we went for a sightseeing walk. We wandered
along the inland and the ocean side. Then we drove along the coast to Mira and
Figueira da Foz. At last we drove to Montemor-o-Velho where we visited the
castle (always raining) and settled for the night at the big market parking lot
down at the village.
15. 01. 2009: Barra
– Montemor-o-Velho (kalt und sehr viel Regen)
Es hat so viel geregnet heute, dass wir weiter
gefahren sind. Erstmal nicht sehr weit, nur weiter südlich zu Costa Nova. Es
hat kurzzeitig aufgehört zu regnent, so dass wir ein wenig spazieren gehen
konnten. Wir sind entlang der Ozean- und des Binnensees gelaufen. Dann sind wir
entlang der Küsten nach Mira und Figueira da Foz gefahren. Zum Schluss sind wir
noch nach Montemor-o-Velho gefahren, wo es eine imposante alte Burg gibt, die
wir auch (natürlich im Regen) besichtichtig haben. Übernachtung auf dem
Markt-Parkplatz unten im Dorf.

January 16, 2009: Montemor-o-Velho – Porto Covo - Vila
Nova de Milfontes
Today we drove over 400 km to Porto Covo and Vila Nova de Milfontes (south of
Sines). We met Lou Avers and Silvia Baumann whom we had
met on April 15, 2006 in Aracena. We had lunch together at a very nice
Snack-Bar “Doce Mar“. We had intended to stay overnight at this place but we
were put down by the fact that the town tries to keep out campers by putting
height limiters so that the rigs cannot park there. We headed to Vila Nova de
Milfontes and after parking our camper along the river, we made a small walk
and found out that we could possibly stay on the other side of the river. So we
drove to Praia Furna and parked our camper on the parking in front of the
restaurant (N 37.71935º, W 8.76224º)
16. 01. 2009: Montemor-o-Velho
– Vila Nova de Milfontes
Heute sind wir über 400 km gefahren. Erst nach Porto
Covo (südlich von Sines) und dann Vila Nova de Milfontes. Wir haben wieder Lou
Avers und Silva Baumann getroffen, die wir am 15. April 2006 in Aracena schon
mal getroffen hatten! Wir haben zusammen mittag gegessen in der sehr netten
Pastelaria „Doce Mar“. Eigentlich wollten wir in diesem Ort übernachten, aber
da man merkt, dass sie alles machen, um Wohnis hier raus zu halten, haben wir
keine Lust mehr gehabt und sind dann nach Vila Nova de Milfontes gefahren. Erst
haben wir entlang dem Fluss geparkt, sind ein wenig durch den Ort spazieren
gegangen, dann haben wir gesehen, dass man vermutlich auf der anderen Seite des
Flusses gut parken konnte und sind dort hingefahren. Und hier bleiben wir jetzt
auch (N 37.71935º, W 8.76224º).

January 17, 2009: Vila Nova de
Milfontes - Almograve
Walk on the cliffs for 2,5 hours. Lunch and
siesta on our very quiet and nice parking area along the river (see day before
for GPS coordinates). Drive to Almograve where we parked at the most end of
town on the cliff with views to the ocean. With our bicycles we drove into
town, had a good coffee and then drove along the cliff road to the natural
harbour “Lapa de Pombas”.
17. 01. 2009: Vila Nova de Milfontes -
Almograve
Wanderung entlang der Steilküste Richtung Süden (2,5
Stunden). Mittagessen und Siesta um Wohni an dem sehr ruhigen Stellplatz
gegenüber V.N. de Milfontes (siehe oben für GPS-Koordinaten). Fahrt nach
Almograve, wo wir uns auf dem Parkplatz am Ende des Stadt auf einem Parkplatz
an der Steilküste gestellt haben. Mit unseren Fahrrädern haben wir noch die
Stadt erkundet, einen Kaffee getrunken und wir sind noch der Felsenküsten
entlang auf einem Weg bis zu dem natürlich Hafen „Lapa de Pombas“ gefahren.
